Specialist Subjects

At Holy Cross we offer the following specialist classes

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

At Holy Cross, we believe in fostering a deeper connection between children and the world around them. Through hands-on experiences and direct engagement with our school grounds and community, children at Holy Cross explore and discover the principles of sustainability. From cultivating gardens, to caring for our school chickens and vineyard, our students engage in meaningful activities that instill a profound understanding of how to create a sustainable future. By nurturing this connection between education and the environment, we empower our students to become stewards of the planet, equipped with the knowledge and passion to make a positive impact in their community and beyond.

VISUAL ART

During Art lessons, the children have an opportunity to develop their creative skills and expressive capacities. They are encouraged to draw on their observations, experiences, and responses to the world around them as a source of ideas.

Emphasis is placed on the process of art making, giving the children opportunities to explore and investigate different materials and media which often leads to new discoveries being made and new skills being developed. They are encouraged to plan, experiment, take risks and try new ideas while being fully immersed in the joy of creating.

The elements of colour, line, shape, form, texture and space are continually developed as the children work on different 2D and 3D art pieces.

JAPANESE

Japanese is the official language of Japan located in the East Asia region and it is also widely used by communities of speakers in Hawaii, Peru and Brazil, and learnt as an additional language by large numbers of students in the Republic of Korea, China, Indonesia and Australia. In Australia, about 400,000 people are learning Japanese.

At Holy Cross each class is taught Japanese once per week. Children have their learning reinforced through listening, reading, speaking, and writing words and sentences in Japanese. Children are involved in hands-on activities, including origami and art craft, to enrich their study of the language. As well as the language, Japanese culture is investigated and integrated into the curriculum.

MUSIC

At Holy Cross Performing Arts allows children to develop their artistic skills through music, dance and drama. The weekly program includes activities that allow the children to explore, create, compose and perform in a safe and inclusive environment. The aim of the program is to develop confidence, risk taking and help children better understand the world around them.

The children learn a variety of instruments such as drumming, recorder and a range of percussion instruments. Private tuition is also available for those children who are interested in further developing their instrumental skills.

The children have many opportunities to perform such as the school choir, talent shows, school plays, assemblies and community events.
